“Peace starts by me, peace starts by ourselves; by coming together and tackling the different issues. Together we can definitely achieve the sustainable peace and unite as one world, one religion, and one god for humanity”.
– Kristina Shree Yadav (4th Semester, BA.LLB)
Upholding the agenda, “Addressing Critical Challenges of Our Time: Interdependence, Mutual Prosperity and Universal Values”, Nepal hosted the regional summit for Asia Pacific nations from November 30 to December 2. It was the first extended international-level summit that Nepal hosted after the BIMSTEC Summit 2018. Universal Peace Federation (UPF) was the prime organizer of the event, which was supported by other partners and supporters including the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace and The International Conference of Asian Political Parties. It hosted around 1,500 delegates representing 45 nations.
I as an observer-cum-hotel staff of this event, felt that there was the vested interest of both the government of Nepal and the organizers. The Nepal communist party led government perceived an opportunity to balance the internal party factions. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal, speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara of Nepal Communist Party attended and delivered their keynotes on various topics during the summit. However, Bhim Bahadur Rawal and others showed dissatisfaction regarding this event openly in the media, which shows that there is internal conflict among the major leaders of Nepal Communist Party. Universal peace Federation being the organizer of this event and the international organization recognized by the United Nation should have played the neutral role regarding the political internal affairs and should have been sensitive of being used for the vested interest of any particular political party, organization or any individual.
Sensitizing this summit as a mission to promote Christianity is an example of funny ignorance of media and some intellectuals. Nepal claiming its constitution as the world’s ideal constitution having clear provisions of “Secularism” is being the mockery term. The head of the state attending different religious events like Teej, Jatras, Eid, Chhath, Lhoshar, Buddha Purnima, Christmas is for respecting different cultures and religion but not promoting or following the particular religion. These kind of celebrations do not become the hot cup of tea for the criticism to those intellectuals but this summit has been made the topic of ill- criticism for the vested motives.
Peace starts by me, Peace starts by ourselves, by coming together and tackling the different issues. Together we can definitely achieve the sustainable peace and unite as one world, one religion, and one god for humanity. APAC summit brought the international dignitaries, government, private sectors and the civil society together to address and deal with the critical challenges from climate change to poverty to promote the peace. The Asia Pacific Summit was the last Summit organized by UPF. In Asia; Myanmar, Phillipines, Cambodia, India, Pakistan were in the line of hosting this mega event. But Nepal grabbed this opportunity with the vigorous effort of Nepali members of the UPF. The dignitaries from the Asia-Pacific region including Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Burmese State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, Head of States from Nauru, Samoa and Tuvalu, vice-president of Philippines and former prime ministers H.D. Deve Gowda of India and Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani of Pakistan also attended and addressed the summit organized at Hyatt Regency Hotel. The various other attendees and delegates presented on the wide range of topics such as terrorism, climate change, government-government cooperation, social security, and regional development. “Sambriddha Nepal, Sukhi Nepali”, the slogan of the Nepal government which was embraced as the theme of Asia Pacific Summit along with its global theme to please the Nepal government for its support which became like chewing the metal-bitten-rice only. It could be better if UPF could grab the wider support of major political parties, civil society, intellectuals, and media, the fourth organ of the state.
As Nepali citizens, we have the first privilege to advocate and promote peace in the universe as we got it as a legacy from the true son, Lord Buddha. So, we have to be the leader, ambassador to prevail peace in the world. The doctrines of Lord Buddha are still the guidelines for peaceful and happy life. No philosopher is able to challenge that till now. The era of the lord Buddha and the era of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and his wife, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon (Founder of UPF) cannot be compared and this can be the issue of the criticism.
